Dylan Thomas is Key to Selling Wales to the US

North America continues to be the most important international market for Wales in terms of visitor spend, contributing £41million to the Welsh economy in 2012.

The drive to attract more high spending visitors from North America steps up a notch this week when Visit Wales tourism officials meet top tour operators on territory in the US and Canada to promote Wales to the travel trade. Visit Wales have teamed up with Welsh Rarebits and Southern Wales Tourism to participate in Destination Britain North America which is the most important event of its kind for generating business from the USA and Canada.

Destination Britain North America offers a prime opportunity to work proactively with the travel trade, a direction endorsed in the Welsh Government’s Strategy for Tourism 2013-2020 which identifies North America as a key market for growth. The event, organised by VisitBritain is being held in Las Vegas from the 10th to the 12th September and it attracts around ninety of the top travel trade buyers and media from the US and Canada offering formal one to one business appointments as well as more informal opportunities to promote all that Wales has to offer.

One of the key selling points will be the Dylan Thomas 100 Festival – a yearlong festival of events next year to mark the centenary of the birth of the poet in Swansea. Dylan Thomas has a huge following in the States. There are Dylan Thomas societies across North America, collections of his manuscripts are in US university libraries at Buffalo, New York and Austin, Texas, and former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter and film star George Clooney are among his many ‘celebrity’ admirers.

Tourism Minister Edwina Hart said:” This is a key event to grow the sales of holidays in Wales through tour operators and travel agents in one of our key overseas markets and provides a great opportunity to ensure Wales is included in their programmes and tours.

Promoting Late Deals with Visit Wales

Visit Wales recently launched a campaign to promote special offers from the trade at the beginning of the Summer Holidays. There has been a massively positive response that clearly shows an appetite for deals and there is still room for more late bookings, therefore they have extended their campaign. Here at DiscoverCarmarthenshire we would like to encourage our local Welsh businesses to get involved if they haven’t already.

Visit Wales sent out an email to 325,884 contacts on their consumer database – these were people who had previously shown an interest in Wales. The email included links to their website and invited consumers to look at the range of late deals available in Wales. The email generated great interest. This promotion included a direct mail campaign using a Wallace & Gromit themed postcard which was sent to 265,382 contacts from their database, which has delivered a very good response to date.

The success of this campaign could greatly help your business. YOU can get involved, for more information, visit: http://www.visitwales.com or contact: marketing@carmarthenshire.gov.uk

New Llanelli Area Visitor Online "Video"

More and more consumers are going online to search for and book their holiday or short break. Carmarthenshire County Council is assisting accommodation providers in their digital promotional actions by providing them with new content (both photographic and moving images) to ensure they maximise any “hit” from a prospective customer.

Attached for your perusal is a web link to draft two of a general promotional video for Llanelli (English version). We have to keep this particular overall video fairly short, therefore we cannot mention all the products but we have longer videos being cut on the Millennium Coastal Park, Pembrey Country Park and the walking product of each village/town. The video doesn’t include any accommodation messages as we find that if we do, none of the actual accommodation providers will use the video!

Link is here but note the voice over is just a draft voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YObZRF7pjmI&feature=youtu.be

Please do not hesitate to contact the marketing office with any thoughts or suggestions. You can do this by emailing: marketing@carmarthenshire.gov.uk

Hundreds flocked to the recreation ground last Saturday which was recorded as the hottest day of the year so far.

Iconic Breed of White Park Cattle is Calving at Dinefwr

Dinefwr Park has announced that their iconic breed of White Park Cattle is now free of TB after a worrying 18 months under movement restrictions and is calving again due to the addition of a new bull.

As a result of the herd contracting TB in 2012, Dinefwr lost a total of 15 cows and their breeding bull. Lead Ranger and Stockman, Wyn Davies said that the new calf is, “fantastic news for the cattle, for us and for the future of the herd.”

He said, “These animals are the rarest of the rare.” In fact, there are only 1000 registered females left in the world and Dinefwr is their ancestral home, so it’s vital they survive and continue to provide a living link to our distant past.

The first calf of the year was born on June 7 – a bull calf of very good pedigree. The new addition has already attracted a lot of attention amongst ancient breed enthusiasts due to his unusual marking, as he was born with red ears.

For further information, contact: marketing@carmarthenshire.gov.uk

Mae Parc Dinefwr wedi cyhoeddi bod eu brîd eiconig o Gwartheg Gwyn yn awr yn rhydd o TB ar ôl 18 mis o peri gofid o dan gyfyngiadau symud, ac yn lloia eto oherwydd meant wedi ychwanegu tarw newydd.

O ganlyniad i'r fuches ddal TB yn 2012, collodd Dinefwr gyfanswm o 15 o wartheg a'u tarw bridio. Ranger a Stockman, dywedodd Wyn Davies fod y llo newydd yw, "newyddion gwych i'r gwartheg, i ni ac i'r dyfodol y fuches."

Dywedodd, "Mae'r anifeiliaid yw'r prinnaf o'r prin." Yn wir, dim ond 1000 o ferched cofrestredig ar ôl yn y byd a Dinefwr yw eu cartref teuluol, felly mae'n hanfodol eu bod yn goroesi ac yn parhau i ddarparu cyswllt byw i'n gorffennol pell .

Y llo cyntaf y flwyddyn ei eni ar Fehefin 7 - llo tarw o dras da iawn. Mae'r ychwanegiad newydd eisoes wedi denu llawer o sylw ymysg selogion brîd hynafol oherwydd ei marcio anarferol, gan iddo gael ei eni â chlustiau cochion.

Visit Wales has recently launched a brand new website with a wealth of new content to help explore Wales. Therefore, it is a fantastic resource for the trade.

The material is relevant and at a level that will help businesses take small steps to develop their use of technology to help improve visibility and accessibility to the modern visitor and showcase different ways of using to enhance their tourism product.

The new visitwales.com site will be drawing images from the Share Wales flickr group and they are encouraging the trade to share their images of Wales. This is a great website for Carmarthenshire businesses to ensure they are included on, as it can enhance the potential for the business being represented in the digital space of those looking at Wales as a destination.

Not only can your business feature on the website, but you have the opportunity to get graded, appear in Visit Wales’ product searches, be considered for their ‘on page’ content, add your Facebook page, write a guest blog and discover public relations opportunities and much more.

It is hoped that the Dylan Thomas 100 Festival, of which Prince Charles is a patron, will boost those figures and add further numbers of international visitors.
