Bringing the Romans back to the Beacons

Visitors to an ancient marching camp in Brecon Beacons National Park can now retrace the footsteps of Roman soldiers thanks to a free, cutting edge mobile app for smart phones and tablets.

The new mobile app is part of the Romans in Carmarthenshire scheme funded through the Heritage Tourism Project managed by Cadw, which is backed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.

The new Walking with Romans application for Apple and Android devices, produced by Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and its partners, will bring the Romans back to life at Y Pigwn marching camp and Waun Ddu fortlet, near Trecastle.

The multimedia app, produced with support from the Cardiff University School of History, Archaeology and Religion and developed by Living Data Labs, uses GPS triggered technology and augmented reality to take visitors on a trip back through time to explore the Roman remains at the site.

Suzanna Jones, Interpretation Officer for Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, said: “The launch of the Walking with Romans app signals the midpoint of a two year project which brought together partners from across Carmarthenshire with the common goal of re-telling the Romans’ story. We’re thrilled with the end product, and we hope users have as much fun utilising the app as we have putting the content together.”

The Walking with Romans app takes users on a four mile walk around the Scheduled Ancient Monument site of Y Pigwn, guided by the voices of local modern day tour guide Rory and Primus, the Roman Legion soldier, who together tell the story of the Romans’ conquest and settlement in the National Park. As well as videos and augmented reality technology that help visitors better understand the layout and role of the camp, the app features helpful guidance on how to get to the site, an itinerary check list and a fun section letting you dress your Roman. The Walking with Romans app also allows users to follow the story at Roman sites in Carmarthenshire including Dolaucothi Gold Mines, Garn Goch, Carmarthenshire Amphitheatre and Carmarthenshire Country Museum.

The ‘Walking with Romans’ app is available to download from the iTunes and Google Play online stores. A link to the app and further details can also be found at www.breconbeacons.org/romans

Iconic Breed of White Park Cattle is Calving at Dinefwr

Dinefwr Park has announced that their iconic breed of White Park Cattle is now free of TB after a worrying 18 months under movement restrictions and is calving again due to the addition of a new bull.

As a result of the herd contracting TB in 2012, Dinefwr lost a total of 15 cows and their breeding bull. Lead Ranger and Stockman, Wyn Davies said that the new calf is, “fantastic news for the cattle, for us and for the future of the herd.”

He said, “These animals are the rarest of the rare.” In fact, there are only 1000 registered females left in the world and Dinefwr is their ancestral home, so it’s vital they survive and continue to provide a living link to our distant past.

The first calf of the year was born on June 7 – a bull calf of very good pedigree. The new addition has already attracted a lot of attention amongst ancient breed enthusiasts due to his unusual marking, as he was born with red ears.

For further information, contact: marketing@carmarthenshire.gov.uk

Mae Parc Dinefwr wedi cyhoeddi bod eu brîd eiconig o Gwartheg Gwyn yn awr yn rhydd o TB ar ôl 18 mis o peri gofid o dan gyfyngiadau symud, ac yn lloia eto oherwydd meant wedi ychwanegu tarw newydd.

O ganlyniad i'r fuches ddal TB yn 2012, collodd Dinefwr gyfanswm o 15 o wartheg a'u tarw bridio. Ranger a Stockman, dywedodd Wyn Davies fod y llo newydd yw, "newyddion gwych i'r gwartheg, i ni ac i'r dyfodol y fuches."

Dywedodd, "Mae'r anifeiliaid yw'r prinnaf o'r prin." Yn wir, dim ond 1000 o ferched cofrestredig ar ôl yn y byd a Dinefwr yw eu cartref teuluol, felly mae'n hanfodol eu bod yn goroesi ac yn parhau i ddarparu cyswllt byw i'n gorffennol pell .

Y llo cyntaf y flwyddyn ei eni ar Fehefin 7 - llo tarw o dras da iawn. Mae'r ychwanegiad newydd eisoes wedi denu llawer o sylw ymysg selogion brîd hynafol oherwydd ei marcio anarferol, gan iddo gael ei eni â chlustiau cochion.

Literature Festival 2014 to be held in Carmarthenshire again

Marketing and Tourism are delighted to announce that
the Dinefwr Literature Festival will return to the National
Trust’s Dinefwr Park in Carmarthenshire in June 2014.
Literature Wales, the National Trust and the University
of Wales Trinity Saint David have also welcomed Cadw
on board as a partner, allowing the majestic Dinefwr Castle
to be used as a stage for various events and activities
during the three day festival.

The Dinefwr Literature Festival has been compared to
Glastonbury with its laid-back West Wales attitude. Welsh
writer Horatio Clare described last year’s event as, “one
of the best, richest and most interesting atmospheres I
have found at ANY festival: the house, the ancient ground
and castle, the weather, the ghosts, the white cattle and the
cream of Welsh writing and performing – how blessed we
were! I think those who were there, were in the beginning
of something special.”

The event is something for the whole family to enjoy
along with an extensive new educational outreach
programme for local school children. Local Member of
Parliament, Jonathan Edwards says that, “The festival
will create unique learning opportunities for young people
and will once again bring a significant boost to the local
economy.”
We look forward to the success of next year’s festival.
