The Best Carmarthenshire Breakfast

On 15 July, four chefs from Carmarthenshire came together at Coleg Sir Gar to serve up the best breakfasts which could be produced in B&B’s and accommodation across the county. The Carmarthenshire Farm Group, accommodation businesses either in the farming or tourism industry were invited to taste the dishes and choose four or five that they would like to take forward to pilot to their guests over the summer.

The chefs who took part included: Julian Preda from the Plough Inn in Rhosmaen, Scott Davis from Cnwd in Crosshands, Stewart Williams from Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli and Marc Scaife from Con Passionata in Carmarthen. They wanted to help demonstrate to the businesses the variety of dishes you can serve to guests by using local produce. The meals ranged from the traditional fry up to high energy breakfast muffins to takeaway.

Fiona Park, owner of Cwmcrwth Farm Cottages and the driving force behind this breakfast initiative said, ‘I believe we have wonderful produce on our doorstep and this is a great opportunity to develop the best breakfast experience Carmarthenshire can offer. It was an excellent event and the chefs produced some great dishes. The most popular dish was Scott from Cnwd’s gorgeous crumpet, piled high with Carmarthenshire cheesy scrambled eggs and smoked sewin on top.’

Ffres, the South West Wales’ Food Tourism initiative are running training courses on cooking these newly designed, unique Carmarthenshire breakfasts, to ensure all businesses are confident in providing the high standard across the board.

Space Exploration from Carmarthenshire Base

The European Space Agency is developing a rocket designed to penetrate the icy surface of Europa, one of Jupiter’s biggest moons – and it’s all being built and tested from a Carmarthenshire base.

A key part of the mission involves firing a ‘penetrator’ rocket probe at Europa with the aim of sending information to the orbiting Juice satellite about the watery world below.

The probe has been designed by Astrium, the British aerospace company. Prototypes of the rocket are now being tested at the seaside missile testing range in Pendine, operated by defence contractor QinetiQ.

One of the major tasks of the Juice mission is to find out whether there is life on Jupiter or its moons. The mission will cost the ESA around £695m over its entire life cycle.

Welsh Tapas Festival

Welsh Tapas Festival takes place in Llandeilo on 7th and 8th September and is calling out to all chefs, professional or amateur, to enter the competitions and for producers of local produce to take stands and take part.

The festival will take over the town for the weekend and close the main street with stalls and a demonstration stage where the competitions will take place. Then in the evenings there will be a music festival feel with bars serving Welsh alcoholic beverages.

The Welsh Tapas Partnership, who are organising the event are working with Ffres (Fresh), a food tourism initiative to showcase the best tastes of south west Wales. They are looking for keen local chefs to compete in this distinct and eye-catching event, as well as local food suppliers to promote their own business by stepping into the limelight.

Wakeboarding at Llanelli’s North Dock

Plans have been given the go ahead for a wakeboarding facility at Llanelli’s North Dock in Carmarthenshire.

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s planning committee has approved plans to install two 7m – high removable towers, ground anchors and cabling on land at North Dock for the sport.

This will be a new and exciting activity for residents and visitors. Matthew Smith of Go Wake said he hopes to have the Llanelli site ready for next year as permission has come too late to capitalise on this summer’s heatwave.

Rugby Legend at Carmarthen Flea Market

This weekend looks likely to be a record turn-out for Towy Antiques Fair’s Summer Antiques and Flea Market on the United Counties Showground.

Wales is well known for its love of rugby, so fans of the sport may be interested to hear that there will be a chance to buy a rare photograph of the Cardiff Rugby team from 1901/02.These fifteen handsome young men, including their legendary captain, H.B. Winfield, were proud members of one of Wales’ premier clubs on the eve of the arrival of the legendary All Blacks in 1902 – still the most controversial touring side ever to come to Wales.

Whatever the weather, buyers will be thick on the ground from 10am. It takes place on Sunday 28th July; admission is £4 for adults with free and plentiful parking available.

Beefy’s Welsh Walk

Sir Ian Botham OBE has launched ‘Beefy’s Big Welsh Walk,’ to raise money for the NSPCC in Wales.

The NSPCC Appeal aims to raise £3 million over three years to provide support and help to the most vulnerable children and young people across Wales.

Over three days in August, Sir Ian Botham will walk along parts of the Welsh Coastal Path, starting in Burry Port on Tuesday 6 August and finishing in Cardiff Bay on Thursday 8 August.

‘The route we’ve chosen will not disappoint as Wales has some of the most beautiful coastline in the world,’ said Sir Ian Botham.

Registration is £15 for individuals for one day or £25 for a family (two adults, two children).

To celebrate the success of the walk, Sir Ian Botham and Max Boyce  will host, ‘Beefy’s Big Welsh Ball,’ at the Vale Resort on Thursday 8 August.

Mae Syr Ian Botham OBE wedi lansio, 'Taith Gerdded Big Beefy Cymru, sef' er mwyn codi arian ar gyfer yr NSPCC yng Nghymru.

Mae apêl yr NSPCC yn anelu at godi £ 3 miliwn dros dair blynedd i ddarparu cefnogaeth a chymorth i'r plant a'r bobl ifanc mwyaf agored i niwed ledled Cymru.

Dros dri diwrnod ym mis Awst, bydd Syr Ian Botham yn gerdded ar hyd rhannau o Lwybr Arfordir Cymru, gan ddechrau ym Mhorth Tywyn ar ddydd Mawrth 6 Awst a gorffen ym mae Caerdydd ar ddydd Iau 8 Awst.

Swansea Bay City Region Launch

Plans to transform South West Wales into an economic powerhouse have taken a major step forwards today with the launch of the first city region in Wales.

Business leaders and local authorities have joined forces with the Welsh Government to create the Swansea Bay Region to help give the area a major economic boost.

Economy Minister Edwina Hart gave the keynote speech and said, “The fact that partners have already worked together to develop an economic regeneration strategy provided an excellent foundation for the development of the City region.”

She continued, “The Swansea Bay City Region Economic Regeneration Strategy identifies a collective approach – the region coming together - to deliver an ambitious plan for economic growth. I am pleased to see a clear vision underpinned by detailed economic analysis of the region.”

David Phillips the leader of Swansea Council said, “These are tough economic times. But as a city region, we will pool resources, expertise and experience to create a profile that will encourage economic development and investment. We don’t have to wait for the economy to turn, we can do it now.”

New Llanelli Area Visitor Online "Video"

More and more consumers are going online to search for and book their holiday or short break. Carmarthenshire County Council is assisting accommodation providers in their digital promotional actions by providing them with new content (both photographic and moving images) to ensure they maximise any “hit” from a prospective customer.

Attached for your perusal is a web link to draft two of a general promotional video for Llanelli (English version). We have to keep this particular overall video fairly short, therefore we cannot mention all the products but we have longer videos being cut on the Millennium Coastal Park, Pembrey Country Park and the walking product of each village/town. The video doesn’t include any accommodation messages as we find that if we do, none of the actual accommodation providers will use the video!

The Merlin Festival returns to Carmarthen again this August 11th.

The festival celebrates the legend and lore of Carmarthen’s ancient links with possibly the world’s most famous wizard, Merlin.

South Wales Guardian Hails Ammanford’s Big Day Out as BIG Success

With the weather on-side, Ammanford’s Big Day Out has been branded a huge success by event organisers and public feedback has been fantastic.

Hundreds flocked to the recreation ground last Saturday which was recorded as the hottest day of the year so far.

Town streets were lined with carnival-goers for the annual parade, which this year, took the Olympic theme, as a procession of sporting clubs walked the route from Manor Road to the field.

‘We decided on the theme of the Olympics because we wanted to promote our sports club,’ said Nigel Evans, president of Ammanford Rotary.

The sporting theme continued on the field with a mini football tournament, tennis taster sessions, wall-climbing, karate, plus zumba sessions from instructor Mercedes Peynado.

The day also saw the presentation of the Carmarthenshire Sports Personality of the Year award to legendary boxing coach and trainer, David Cass of Towy ABC.

Cafodd strydoedd y dref eu leinio gyda pobl lleol er mwyn chefnogi y carnifal a’r gorymdaith blynyddol. Eleni, cymerodd y thema Olympaidd, gyda gorymdaith o glybiau chwaraeon yn cerdded y llwybr o Ffordd Manor i'r maes.

'Rydym wedi penderfynu ar thema'r Gemau Olympaidd oherwydd ein bod yn awyddus i hyrwyddo ein clwbiau chwaraeon,' meddai Nigel Evans, llywydd Rotari Rhydaman.

Roedd y thema chwaraeon yn parhau ar y cae gyda twrnamaint pêl-droed mini, sesiynau blasu tenis, wal dringo, karate, yn ogystal â sesiynau zumba gan yr hyfforddwr Mercedes Peynado.

The One Show at the National Botanic Garden of Wales

Keep an eye out for Carmarthenshire’s National Botanic Garden of Wales being shown tomorrow night on BBC One.

Cerys Matthews and Gyles Brandreth visit the Gardens in Carmarthenshire. Highlights will include the story behind a Tom Jones classic, a feature about a lion cub who lived in a London furniture shop and a report on the menace of aphids.

At the moment, The One Show is off air for its summer break but BBC One will be showing four compilation shows showcasing some of the finest films from the last year.

2014 Big Year for Dylan Thomas

2014 marks the centenary of the Welsh poet, author and legend, Dylan Thomas. Wales is celebrating with the year-long DT100 Festival.

Literature Wales has organised a preview event on July 20th 2013 called, ‘A Dylan Odyssey.’ It is an opportunity to revisit the poems and experience the landscapes that inspired them.

During the DT100 Festival, fans of Thomas will be celebrating his life and legacy in Wales, England, Ireland and the United States.

The ‘warm-up’ event will see audiences canoeing out onto the Taf Estuary to view Dylan’s Boathouse from the water, followed by jazz and New York- inspired food in food critic Simon Wright’s culinary emporium. Throughout 2014, poets and singers, scholars, actors and novelists will be performing, celebrating and revisiting the life and legacy of Wales’ best-known author.

Elevate Cymru - Work Based Learning

Elevate Cymru is a new European project  that offers a variety of funded accredited short modules for Work Based Learning.  These modules support businesses to achieve profitable growth by improving employee’s skills and leadership levels.  Modules are accredited by the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David, and are held on the Carmarthen Campus.

The modules offered are of great benefit to local businesses  and anyone living or working within the convergence area are eligible to attend these modules.

Recruitment and selection
Workplace Coaching
Work-based learning project
Mindfulness in the Workplace
Interpreting Financial Statements for Businesses
Interpreting Financial Statements for Sole Traders
Managing teams
Developing leadership skills

Below is the eligible criteria that you must meet for all Elevate CYMRU Courses: 
Live and/or work within the Convergence area of Wales  (Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea).

Employed by an organisation that is registered as a Company and hold a Company number or registered Self-employed with the HMRC and hold a Unique Tax Reference. 
State Aid rules also apply.

No previous qualifications are required and each participant will be supported by a Personal tutor.  All modules are held at the University’s Carmarthen campus.  However, if a group (min 5), and adequate training facilities are available, we could carry out the training on site.

Iconic Breed of White Park Cattle is Calving at Dinefwr

Dinefwr Park has announced that their iconic breed of White Park Cattle is now free of TB after a worrying 18 months under movement restrictions and is calving again due to the addition of a new bull.

As a result of the herd contracting TB in 2012, Dinefwr lost a total of 15 cows and their breeding bull. Lead Ranger and Stockman, Wyn Davies said that the new calf is, “fantastic news for the cattle, for us and for the future of the herd.”

He said, “These animals are the rarest of the rare.” In fact, there are only 1000 registered females left in the world and Dinefwr is their ancestral home, so it’s vital they survive and continue to provide a living link to our distant past.

The first calf of the year was born on June 7 – a bull calf of very good pedigree. The new addition has already attracted a lot of attention amongst ancient breed enthusiasts due to his unusual marking, as he was born with red ears.

Mae Parc Dinefwr wedi cyhoeddi bod eu brîd eiconig o Gwartheg Gwyn yn awr yn rhydd o TB ar ôl 18 mis o peri gofid o dan gyfyngiadau symud, ac yn lloia eto oherwydd meant wedi ychwanegu tarw newydd.

O ganlyniad i'r fuches ddal TB yn 2012, collodd Dinefwr gyfanswm o 15 o wartheg a'u tarw bridio. Ranger a Stockman, dywedodd Wyn Davies fod y llo newydd yw, "newyddion gwych i'r gwartheg, i ni ac i'r dyfodol y fuches."

Dywedodd, "Mae'r anifeiliaid yw'r prinnaf o'r prin." Yn wir, dim ond 1000 o ferched cofrestredig ar ôl yn y byd a Dinefwr yw eu cartref teuluol, felly mae'n hanfodol eu bod yn goroesi ac yn parhau i ddarparu cyswllt byw i'n gorffennol pell .

Y llo cyntaf y flwyddyn ei eni ar Fehefin 7 - llo tarw o dras da iawn. Mae'r ychwanegiad newydd eisoes wedi denu llawer o sylw ymysg selogion brîd hynafol oherwydd ei marcio anarferol, gan iddo gael ei eni â chlustiau cochion.

5 Things to do this Hot July Weekend in Carmarthenshire

Carmarthenshire is a beautiful location no matter what the weather. However, this week’s heat wave is a fantastic time to explore the wealth of activities and spectacular diverse landscapes in the area.

There is so much on offer that it’s difficult to know where to know where to start. This weekend, there are many events to consider as well as our beaches, walks, country parks, castles, camping and much, much more. This weekend features:

1. Ammanford’s Big Day Out. With a crowd of over 4,000 in 2012, the Big Day Out returns with Pant Glas World of Nature bird of Prey display, a fun fair, children’s entertainment, climbing wall, gigantic five-a-side football competition, stalls, scarlet’s rugby inflatables, refreshments and lots more.

2. On Saturday, International Day of Dance returns to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Dancers from Russia and Ireland will join teams from all over Wales for a day of dancing.

3. Special Vintage is also taking place at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Members of the Vintage Motorcycle Club - the largest motorcycle club in the world - will be showing off their bikes to visitors in Millennium Square.

4. Taith Gerdded at Dinefwr Castle. Free event beginning at Dinefwr park entrance. Walking boots are recommended.

5. Llandeilo Fawr Festival of Music begins on Saturday. Some of the artists scheduled to appear include: The Chilinginian String Quartet, pianist Mark Bebbington and harpist Claire Jones to name a few.

Taste Local Opportunity for Food and Tourism Businesses

Taste Local has launched a ‘Learning Journey Bursary’ which is open to all food, drink, and hospitality and tourism businesses within the rural wards of South West Wales. There are forty bursaries at an 80% funding rate with a maximum of £800 per business available. Businesses are being urged to get in touch if they would like to apply for a bursary to join others in the sector on a visit to Puglia in Italy as groups on 23rd September for 4-5 days.

Several local businesses have already been successful in their applications to undertake Taste Local Learning Journeys to Italy as a means of developing and growing their own businesses including Teifi Cheese, Nomnom, Con Passionata and Lwynhelyg Farm Shop.

The different groups will be visiting cheese producers, confectionary businesses, cookery schools and restaurants, vine yards and food trails/ farm shops/preserves in the region.

Taste Local Co-ordinator, Lowri Edwards said, ‘We only have a few bursaries still available so it is really important that anyone interested gets in touch as soon as possible. Businesses can apply for individual bursaries too if they do not want to go as part of a group.’

Mae deugain o fwrsariaethau ar gyfradd ariannu o 80% gydag uchafswm o £ 800 ar gael. Mae busnesau yn cael eu hannog i gysylltu â ni os ydynt am wneud cais am fwrsariaeth i ymuno ag eraill yn y sector a ymweliad â Puglia yn yr Eidal fel grwp ar 23 Medi am 4-5 diwrnod.
